Design & Development Objectives

Our primary goal was to overhaul the outdated DIY website and transform it into a dynamic platform that reflects the club’s heritage and forward-thinking attitude. We focused on three key areas:

  • Visual Appeal and Usability: Creating a modern design that resonated with the club’s vibrant community spirit.

  • Targeted Communication Funnels: Replacing the single, generic contact form with dedicated forms to streamline enquiries for new players, sponsors, volunteers, and general queries.

  • Content Organisation: Enhancing the structure of the teams and sponsors sections to better highlight the club’s extensive involvement in the community.

The Redesign Process

Visual Identity and Layout

We began with a complete visual overhaul, opting for a design that was both contemporary and easy on the eye. The chosen colour scheme, layout, and typography played a crucial role in setting the tone. We selected Oswald as the heading font paired with Source Sans for the body text, which together provided a robust yet inviting look consistent with sports branding.

One of the standout features on the homepage is the fixed side menu that lists the different teams. This layout is reminiscent of other successful sports websites, where fixtures and results are readily accessible, ensuring that visitors quickly find the information relevant to their interests.

Streamlined Communication Funnels

A significant pain point for Heyside FC was the single contact form that led to endless back-and-forth communications. To solve this, we implemented four distinct contact forms:

  • New Player Enquiry

  • Sponsor Enquiry

  • Volunteer Enquiry

  • General Contact

Each funnel directs visitors to the appropriate page, ensuring that the committee receives detailed and targeted information right from the first point of contact. This approach not only saves time but also enhances the overall user experience.

Enhanced Teams & Sponsors Pages

Given that the club caters to various age groups and teams, the old teams page—a long, unreadable list—needed a complete rework. We segmented the teams by age group, creating dedicated pages for each group. Within these pages, visitors can easily view the multiple teams available, complete with team photos and sponsor details. This clear and organised presentation significantly improves navigation and engagement.

The sponsors also received a spotlight in the new design. Recognising their importance in supporting the club, we created an animated carousel on the homepage that continuously displays sponsor logos, alongside a dedicated sponsors page. This not only honours existing sponsors but also serves as an attractive proposition for potential new sponsors.

Additional Features for Community Engagement

To further bolster community involvement, we added a sticky banner on every webpage to actively canvass for volunteers. This ensures that the call to action for volunteer support is visible no matter where users are on the site, driving higher engagement and recruitment.

The Results

The transformation of Heyside FC’s website was a comprehensive success. The before and after images clearly demonstrate the leap from an outdated, cumbersome site to a modern, easy-to-navigate digital platform. The targeted communication funnels have drastically reduced the back-and-forth between the committee and potential members, while the enhanced teams and sponsors pages have boosted both engagement and community pride.

This project highlights how a focused redesign, tailored to the specific needs of a community organisation, can significantly improve user experience and operational efficiency.
